Fertinagro Biotech, the leading plant nutrition company in Spain, has just received the granting of a new European patent consisting of a microbial stimulation fertilizer technology that enhances the biological fixation of environmental nitrogen in the soil. This patented technology will allow us to offer alternative nutritional solutions by reducing the amount of conventional nitrogen fertilizers needed for nutrition, while reducing environmental costs and helping to make agriculture more sustainable.

This patented technology will allow us to offer alternative nutritional solutions by reducing the amount of conventional nitrogen fertilizers needed for nutrition, while reducing environmental costs and helping to make agriculture more sustainable.

This patent, registered under the title "Fertilizer composition that includes ions complexed with humic substances to improve the biological fixation of nitrogen by microorganisms present in the soil" and identified under number 16382063, has been validated in Spain, Germany, and France. Portugal, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland and Belgium. And with it, they already add more than 40 patents obtained by the company both nationally and internationally.

Nitrogen is an essential element for the development of a plant and has been used as a fertilizer (chemical or organic) for hundreds of years. The disproportionate use of this element as a fertilizer is nowadays a great ecological problem. Since nitrogen is a very reactive element in the soil and it has a great tendency to be lost as nitrate or nitrogen oxides when applied in an uncontrolled way. This generates significant pollution flows to the groundwater bodies and the atmosphere. The generation of products that promote the efficient use of nitrogen by crops is an essential milestone to achieve sustainable agriculture.

There are bacteria in the soil with the capacity to fix nitrogen atmospheric gas, converting it into an assimilable nutrient for them. However, the deterioration of the soil microbiota due to the excessive use of conventional fertilizers and other factors of agriculture, has caused an increasing number of agricultural soils with reduced amounts of this type of fixing bacteria and therefore less nitrogen available for crops, causing a significant reduction in productivity.

The new Fertinagro Biotech technology consists of a fertilizer composition that includes certain ions essential for the nitrogen fixation process, complexed with humic substances that make them quickly and permanently accessible to bacteria that need them, in particular, nitrogen-fixing microorganisms , which causes its absorption by the crops.

The application of this technology will reduce the total amount of nitrogen used as fertilizer without reducing the crop's capacity to generate a harvest. In this way, the application of this technology will have an economic impact, due to the increased efficiency of the products that contain it, and a strong environmental impact due to the reduction of the fertilizer units necessary to nourish the crop, a key objective in the new European strategy "Farm to Fork".

This fertilizer composition not only facilitates the development and growth of plants, but also constitutes a treatment for the soil, more specifically for the microorganisms present in it, reducing the need to nourish it with nitrogenous fertilizers.

Thanks to this technology, which can be applied to nutritional solutions for both fertigation and granules, and which promotes the exploitation of natural resources such as nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria, a reduction in the non-renewable energy used to convert nitrogen into assimilable forms such as ammonium, nitrites or nitrates. All this will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the agricultural activity itself, reducing costs for the farmer and reducing the environmental cost.
